Interview with Passive House Designer and Architect, Graham Irwin about the Passive House movement in the U.S.
Kevin talks with Ann Edminster about her years of advocacy and how the new mission is to reduce carbon, not just save energy.
A talk with Bruce King reveals what we should actually be tracking when sourcing sustainable materials.
Bronwyn is awesome in her pursuit for better built housing and utilizes the Passive House methodology, and her years of experience, to guide her clients towards net-zero.
Kevin talks with ex-Mr. Insulation, Charles Bennet about how his insulation business has changed over the years and where it's headed.
A better-built building starts at the foundation. Better Builders always air seal every junction between dissimilar materials and where air leakage paths might exist.
Moisture management is also a key consideration all the way up the structure. Moisture barriers, drainage breaks, and filter cloth wrapped drain pipe all play a part in controlling moisture.
Exterior or "outboard" insulation layers are the wall of choice amongst better builders. The outboard layer thickness can be increased depending upon climate. The value is how this layer slows down thermal and moisture "drive" before it can enter the wall cavity.
When bad builders fail to consider the hydrostatic pressure of the site, bad things happen. Here, the water table is exposed on the exterior of the foundation wall....
....Inside that foundation wall we see the effects of the water entering the crawlspace....
...with a crawlspace treatment, the moisture migration up into the building assembly is drastically minimized.
